CHARLOTTE, Dec. 31 The Golden State Warriors are looking to ring in the New Year above .500, while the Charlotte Hornets are simply trying to find enough healthy bodies to field a competitive frontcourt.
Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. ET at the Spectrum Center for this interconference clash, with the headline attraction being Stephen Curry’s annual homecoming. The Warriors (17-16) arrive with momentum, fresh off a decisive 120-107 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. Conversely, the Hornets (11-21) are reeling, having dropped a 113-123 decision to the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday.
A Tale of Two Trajectories
Golden State appears to be steadying the ship after an up-and-down start to the season. Riding a one-game winning streak, the Warriors have benefited heavily from the evergreen dominance of Curry. The two-time MVP is averaging a team-high 28.8 points per game, complemented by 4.3 assists and 4.0 rebounds.
“Steph’s gravity changes everything for us,” head coach Steve Kerr noted recently. “Even at this stage, he’s the engine.”
For Charlotte, the narrative is one of frustration. Despite flashes of brilliance from their young core, injuries have prevented them from finding a consistent rhythm.
The Injury Bug Bites Charlotte
While the Warriors are relatively healthy missing only Seth Curry (sciatic nerve irritation) and G League players the Hornets are navigating a full-blown roster crisis.
Charlotte’s frontcourt has been decimated. Centers Mason Plumlee (groin) and Ryan Kalkbrenner (elbow) are confirmed out, leaving the paint vulnerable. To make matters worse, forward Miles Bridges is listed as questionable with a right ankle sprain, alongside veteran Pat Connaughton (ankle soreness).
However, there is a glimmer of hope for the home crowd: rookie sensation Kon Knueppel is listed as probable. His return would be a massive boost, as he has averaged an impressive 19.3 points per game, providing critical floor spacing.
The Burden on LaMelo
With the roster depleted, the spotlight burns brighter on LaMelo Ball. The Hornets’ point guard is averaging 20.0 points and 8.4 assists, but he will need significant help to keep pace with Golden State’s firepower.
That help likely needs to come from Brandon Miller. Despite appearing in only 16 games this season, Miller has been productive, contributing 18.8 points per night. Against a disciplined Warriors defense, Charlotte’s young trio of Ball, Miller, and (potentially) Knueppel must operate at peak efficiency to pull off the upset.
