CHARLOTTE, Dec. 31 — The Golden State Warriors and Charlotte Hornets are heading in opposite directions as they close out the calendar year.
When they meet for a Wednesday afternoon matinee at the Spectrum Center, the Warriors (17-16) will be looking to push above .500, fueled by the star power of Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler. Meanwhile, the reeling Hornets (11-21) are desperate to snap a losing skid and salvage a homestand that has been defined by a crowded injury report.
A Tale of Two Backcourts
Golden State arrives in Charlotte with momentum. In their Monday night road victory over the Brooklyn Nets, the Warriors’ new-look core clicked efficiently. Stephen Curry led the charge with 27 points and five assists, while Jimmy Butler—proving to be the stabilizing force Golden State needed—added a versatile 21 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
The Hornets, conversely, are looking for silver linings in losses. Despite falling to the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday, Charlotte’s young duo dazzled. Brandon Miller exploded for 31 points and eight rebounds, while LaMelo Ball orchestrated the offense with 26 points and seven assists.
For Charlotte to compete with Golden State’s veteran savvy, they will need Miller and Ball to replicate that production against a much stiffer perimeter defense.
Injury Update: Reinforcements and Absences
The major storyline heading into tip-off is the disparity in health between the two rosters.
Golden State: The Warriors received a significant boost Wednesday morning. Veteran big man Al Horford is officially off the injury report and available to play after resting Monday. The only absence for Golden State is Seth Curry, who remains out with left sciatic nerve irritation and is expected to miss at least two more weeks.
Charlotte: The Hornets are navigating a roster crisis, specifically in the frontcourt.
-
The Big Blow: Forward Miles Bridges is listed as Questionable after a right ankle sprain forced him out of the Bucks game in the first quarter.
-
Frontcourt Thinning: With Mason Plumlee (groin) and Ryan Kalkbrenner (elbow) ruled out, and Grant Williams (ACL) still sidelined, the Hornets are dangerously thin on size.
-
The Good News: Rookie sharpshooter Kon Knueppel (ankle) has been upgraded to Probable and is expected to return, providing much-needed spacing.
Next Man Up
If Bridges is unable to suit up, head coach Charles Lee may be forced to rely on rookies Tidjane Salaun and Liam McNeeley for expanded roles. Against a Warriors team that thrives on exploiting defensive mismatches, throwing rookies into the fire could be a risky but necessary gamble.
